PAL chairman says Swedish poet Peter Curman will receive ‘Quaid-e-Azam Award for Literature’, and Bilawal Bhutto ‘Quaid-e-Awam Award for Democracy’ on behalf of Benazir

ISLAMABAD: The ceremony to give international “Quaid-e-Azam Award for Literature” and “Quaid-e-Awam Award for Democracy” is likely to be held between August 10-20, said Pakistan Academy of Letters (PAL) Chairman Fakhar Zaman on Thursday while addressing a press briefing.
Zaman said Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani would be the chief guest on this occasion.
Zaman said these awards amounted to Rs 2 million each. He said renowned Swedish poet Peter Curman was nominated for international “Quaid-e-Azam Award” and Benazir Bhutto for international “Quaid-e-Awam Award” for the year 2008.
He said Curman would personally receive the “Quaid-e-Azam Award” and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari had been requested to receive the “Quaid-e-Awam Award” on behalf of Benazir Bhutto.
He said Benazir Bhutto had announced launching of these awards while addressing the inaugural ceremony of International Conference of Writers and Intellectuals in 1995, but due to change of government nothing could be done in this regard.
Conferences: He said PAL would arrange an international conference on “Sufism and Peace” from October 4 to October 7 and more than 100 delegates from 70 countries and Pakistani writers will participate.
He said PAL would arrange “Balochistan Writers Conference” in the first week of August and “Northern Areas Writers Conference” in the end of August.
Quota: Zaman said PAL was initiating a plan for quota of plots to writers in the federal and provincial governments’ housing schemes. He said PAL would request the government to direct the authorities concerned for allotting quota of residential plots for the writers.
He said PAL would publish a book on Zulfikar Ali Bhutto (ZAB) as a writer and intellectual. And reprint the book “Bhutto’s Trial” in two volumes.
He said they were also working to produce a selection of anonymous writers works related to ZAB. Another book titled “Khushboo Ki Shahdat” comprising poems about martyrdom of ZAB would be published soon, he said.
He said to preserve the best work produced in jails during martial law regimes PAL would launch “Pas-e-Zindan Award” for best writings during that period.
